It was a much different race than two years ago for incumbent Carl Sciortino, who was overwhelmingly re-elected to his seat in the 34th Middlesex District.
Sciortino took Medford against fellow resident Richard Cannava in a 3 to 1 vote, with 3,760 votes to 1,775. In Somerville, Sciortino swept with 3,821 votes to Cannava's 955.
"I'm very grateful for another two years of serving the community," Sciortino said, minutes before walking into Gov. Deval Patrick's victory celebration over Republican Charles Baker in Boston. "I want to thank all the voters who voted not only for me, but who voted. Regardless of who people voted for, it was encouraging to see people vote statewide."
Sciortino added he will continue to work on issues surrounding public transportation, especially in bringing the Green Line to Medford and Somerville.
"And education reform will also continue to be a priority of mine," he added.
Cannava could not be reached for comment.
