Rep. Carl Sciortino, D-Medford, was named today by Speaker Robert DeLeo as vice chairman of the Joint Committee on Transportation.
Sciortino, a strong advocate for public transportation, served as a member of the committee in both of his previous terms in the state legislature.
"Transportation has been one of my top priorities in the legislature," said Sciortino. "I have pushed for public transportation and been a strong proponent of the Green Line extension to Medford and Somerville. As vice chair of the committee, I will continue to work for improved public transportation as part of an equitable, comprehensive solution to our transportation needs."
In addition to being named vice chair of the Transportation Committee, Sciortino was appointed to the House Committee on Ways and Means and the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing. The Committee on Ways and Means handles the budget process for the House and reviews all legislation that involves state finances. The Committee on Health Care Financing crafted the state's health care reform legislation and continues to address issues such as health care affordability and access.
"Carl has been a hard-working legislator, and I know that he will continue to serve the commonwealth and his communities well in these posts," said DeLeo. "I look forward to working with him as we face the challenging issues confronting us, such as transportation reform."
"I'm honored by the trust the speaker has placed in me with these committee assignments," added Sciortino. "Serving on these committees will allow me to continue what I have done for the past four years -- work for the needs of those in my district and push for better policies for all of Massachusetts."
