Medford - Gov. Deval Patrick arrived in Somerville to campaign in support of Democratic state Rep. Carl Sciortino, D-Medford, who is running for re-election this fall.

The event, held at Sabur Restaurant in Teele Square July 21, drew a packed house of 200 people, including Somerville Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz and state Sen. Pat Jehlen, who introduced Patrick and other elected officials in attendance included: Reps. Paul Donato, D-Medford, Stat Smith, D-Everett, and Jamie Eldridge, D-Acton; Adam Sweeting, Mark Niedergang and Paul Bockelman of the Somerville School Committee; and Ann Marie Cugno and Paulette Van der Kloot of the Medford School Committee.

"I'm here because I want to ask you to send back to Beacon Hill one of the best partners we have -- Carl Sciortino," said Patrick.

Citing Sciortino's commitment to "working people, fairness, and economic opportunity," the governor added, "In addition to statesmanship, he has a kindness and thoughtfulness about him, and a sense of where policy touches people -- that's why I'm here."

"I'm honored to have the support of Gov. Patrick," said Sciortino. "I've enjoyed the opportunity to work with him over the past four years on critical issues, such as bringing the Green Line to Somerville and Medford, closing corporate tax loopholes, ensuring marriage equality, and supporting clean energy and the life sciences. Four years is a good start, but there's a lot more work to do, and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to fight for the issues that matter to Medford and Somerville."

Sciortino is a two-term Democratic state representative in the 34th Middlesex District, serving parts of Somerville and Medford. A strong advocate for issues such as education, economic development, and public transportation, he is running a sticker campaign for re-election on Sept. 16.
