The Winter Hill Yacht Club has two weeks to start paying rent on state land it's using to dock boats or vacate the property, says DCR.

The release and warning were both issued on Nov. 1, meaning the club has a little more than two weeks to pay the state its overdue rent. The yacht club owes the state $34,000 for three years of occupancy.

The Winter Hill Yacht Club has been storing boats on the Mystic River on a parcel of state-owned land the city wants to expand Draw 7 Park.

State representative Carl Sciortino said since the club was not open to non-members, it had no business occupying public land, let alone squatting.

"They're not providing public benefit," Sciortino said. "I don't believe that a yacht club not paying its bills should get in the way of improving the public park."

In a press release the DCR said the yacht club has been riding free for too long. "if a yacht club does not obtain a permit and pay the required fee, steps will be taken to address the lack of compliance."
